Good and Evil in Young Goodman Brown by Nathaniel Hawthorne Essay
Good and Evil in Young Goodman Brown by Nathaniel Hawthorne In ââ¬Å"Young Goodman Brown,â⬠there is a fight between good and evil with one main character being torn between the two sides and every other character seemingly on one side or the other through the readerââ¬â¢s view, although many characters do deceive Goodman Brown about whether they are good or evil. This fight between the two sides and the deception that causes confusion for Goodman Brown is the source of tension throughout the entire story. In ââ¬Å"Young Goodman Brown,â⬠every characterââ¬â¢s traits and dialogue, the setting, and even colors mentioned have double meanings and are symbolic to the main binary oppositions of either good or evil. In the beginning of the story, Young Goodman Brown ââ¬Å"crosses the thresholdâ⬠of his home, leaving his Faith, whom he calls his ââ¬Å"angel on earthâ⬠and traveling on a journey into the dark night (page 2186). Right away the reader sees that Faith is symbolic of goodness, although she does wear pink ribbons, a mixture of white and red that symbolizes purity and sexuality, but these are worn in the confines of her marriage, causing the reader to view the pink as being sacred. The journey Goodman Brown is taking is opposite of everything that Faith stands for and immediately appears to be ominous when good Faith begs him to stay with ââ¬Å"trouble in her face, as if a dream had warned her what work is to be done tonightâ⬠(2187). Goodman Brown knows that he is leaving for an ââ¬Å"evil purpose,â⬠but feels justified in doing so because ââ¬Å"after this one night [heââ¬â¢ll] cling to [Faithââ¬â¢s] skirts and follow her to Heaven,â⬠as if hi s association with Faith, who represents goodness, will save him and allow him to enter into Heaven even if he enters into the si... ...odman Brown is forever changed by the revealing of the true deceptive nature of his fellow Christians that night. Everything and everyone he believed in is now viewed as evil, not good. His own worship in church is drowned by ââ¬Å"an anthem of sin [that] rushed loudly upon his ear and drowned the blessed strainâ⬠of his song (2195). The key fact is that Goodman Brown let the evil images and people take his Faith away, but he never stops being ââ¬Å"followed by Faith,â⬠even when she is ââ¬Å"an aged womanâ⬠and he is ââ¬Å"borne to his graveâ⬠(2195). He stops loving and living by his Faith, but she never stops loving and living by him. Evil overtakes Goodman Brown, making his dying hour gloom, but Faith remains in the end. Technology and Culture
There is no denying to the fact that changes occur in life as the world develops in its technology. Traditions and customs, culture of each and every race in Malaysia get a setback in this case. An attempt to keep them alive is a controversial matter and become debatable as we are somehow ââ¬Ëmodernizedââ¬â¢ by the West. It is somehow painful and sad to see traditions and customs dying as we all humans have intense emotional bond with cultures and traditions but the stark reality have to be accepted that the world is a stage of flux and change. There are several reasons to why our traditions and customs are abandoned. Firstly, the advancement in telecommunication has influenced our minds to choose between cultures to which one that are convenient. We tend to look for and turn to the way as well as the one that is more convenient and are accessible. It is human nature for youths especially to adapt to changes faster. For instance, the existence of the social network called Facebo ok that enables us to connect with people from all walks of life by just typing a personââ¬â¢s name without actually knowing the person well.On festive seasons, we, young people need not going around visiting relatives and friends as well as going back to our respective hometowns anymore, we just wish them and greet them through the social network and phone them. Somehow, the tradition of visiting relatives and friends during festive seasons soon will be a history of life. Furthermore, the technology has moved peopleââ¬â¢s interest to play traditional games to modern and virtual games. Many youths nowadays are often categorize as the visual people. They often spend their time going to cybercafà © or at home playing computer games to the wee hours. If you ask them about traditional games they would just stare blankly at you because they as well as children nowadays only know how to swipe on the gadgets that theirs parents have. Probably, they are somehow called ââ¬Ëheliophob iaââ¬â¢ which means a person who is fear of sunlight as most of our traditional games are played outdoors. Traditional games have now been ruled over by virtual games and have now been an ââ¬Ëold-fashionedââ¬â¢ in youngsters mind. Moreover, the technology has equipped us with more knowledge and we become more open-minded and more rational in thinking. If we would like to know more about more information on a certain thing or events, we could just click on the mouse and search information from the internet as search engines provides us with much information. Referring to books and newspaper have been sort of ââ¬Ëout-datedââ¬â¢ thing. On the other hand, we can now learn cultural dance through the advance video technology, YouTube. We no longer take the first step to actually ask our mentor or the cultural dance performer or instructor to train us to dance correctly. Even now, the cultural dance is called cultural cum modern dance in the video website. The younger generati on eventually become more open-minded as they think what they are doing is ââ¬Ëcoolââ¬â¢ and fashion has overpowered traditional wears in certain ethnics. All in all, advancements in technology surely have caused traditions and culture to get a setback. The government as well as the responsible authorities should organize campaigns and take action so that the young will know the legacy that our ancestors have practiced and passed on to us. Perhaps, a cultural dance such as lion dance, fan dance, ââ¬Ëbharatanatyamââ¬â¢ being performed on occasions will get younger generation to know their culture better. They will then pass on to the next generation. It is never too late to teach them on culture and traditions, which is a legacy to leave behind when we are gone leaving a great impact on the next generation.

Land Breeze Definition
A land breeze is a local nighttime and early morning wind that occurs along coasts and blows offshore (from the land out to sea). It arises at sunset when the sea surface is warmer than the adjacent land due to the land cooling off faster and having a lower heat capacity, and continues into the early morning hours until the heating of the day begins. Although commonly associated with ocean shorelines, land breezes can also be experienced near lakes and other large bodies of water. An Overnight and Early Morning Wind Like all winds, land breezes form because of a difference in air pressure and temperature. During the day, the sun will heat land surfaces, but only to a depth of a few inches. At night, water will retain more of its heat than land surfaces. (This is because it has a higher heat capacity than land.) Land breezes usually occur at night. At night, the temperature of the land cools quickly without the insolation from the sun. Heat is rapidly re-radiated back to the surrounding air. The water along the shore will then be warmer than the coastal land, creating a net movement of air from the land surfaces towards the ocean. Why? Well, the movement of the wind is a result of differences in air pressure over the land and the ocean. Warm air is less dense and rises. Cool air is more dense and sinks. As the temperature of the land surfaces cool, the warm air rises and creates a small area of high pressure near the land surface. Since winds blow from areas of high to low pressure, the net movement of air (wind) is from the shore to the sea. Steps to Land Breeze Formation Heres a step-by-step explanation of how land breezes are created. Air temperatures decrease at night.Rising air creates a thermal low at the ocean surface.Cool air collects forming a high-pressure zone above the surface of the ocean.A low-pressure zone forms above the land surface from the rapid loss of heat.A high-pressure zone forms as the cooler land cools the air immediately above the surface.Winds aloft flow from the ocean to the land.Winds at the surface flow from high to low pressure creating a land breeze. Longer Near Summer's End As the summer wears on, the temperature of the sea will slowly rise in comparison to the daily temperature fluctuations of the land, meaning that the land breeze will last longer and longer. Nighttime Thunderstorms If there are sufficient moisture and instability in the atmosphere, land breezes can lead to overnight showers and thunderstorms just offshore. While you might be tempted to take a nighttime beach walk, be sure to follow these lightning safety guidelines to reduce your risk of a lightning strike. Watch your step as well, since storms can stir up and encourage jellyfish to wash ashore! Land breezes are the opposite of sea breezes -- gentle winds that develop over the ocean and blow onshore, keeping you cool during a scorching hot day on the beach.
